History of PGRI
University Semarang
The PGRI Semarang
University was established by the PGRI regional management agency of Central
Java Province through the Central Java IKIP PGRI Education Organization
Development Fund (YPLP) and transitioned from IKIP PGRI Semarang to Semarang
Institute of Technology. The purpose of establishing the university is to
prepare future leaders with exceptional competencies and national character so
that they can become role models in the life of the nation and the state, aimed
at achieving the welfare of the entire Indonesian society. Throughout its
development history, the journey of PGRI Semarang University can be divided
into five main phases.
The first phase is the
institutional pioneering period (1981-1986). This period was marked by the
establishment of IKIP PGRI Central Java on July 23, 1981, by the regional
management agency of PGRI Central Java under the leadership of Dr. Riwidigdo.
Some founding figures included Taruna, SH; Dr. Riwidigdo; Dr. Karseno; Dr. R.
Antonius Supardi Hadiatmodjo; Dr. Muhammad Oemar; Dr. Thomas Sabar Adiutomo;
Dr. Abdul Latief Nawawi SH; Dr. Soeparjo; Mrs. Widayati Sumiyatun Soeharto; and
Dr. Teddy Iskandi. Through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture
No. 0395/0/1984, IKIP PGRI Central Java was renamed STKIP PGRI Central Java.
The second phase is the
institutional development period (1987-1992). During this time, under the
leadership of Chancellor Taruna, SH, STKIP PGRI Central Java was renamed IKIP
PGRI Semarang.
The third phase is the
academic development period (1993-1997). This period was led by Rector PGS. Dr.
Satmoko, focusing primarily on improving the quality of faculty through
advanced study programs. The academic development process was completed during the
leadership of GS. Dr. Sugijono, M.Si. (1997-2001) with six study programs:
Indonesian Language and Literature Education (PBSI), English Language Education
(PBI), Mathematics Education (Pend. Mat), Psychology and Educational Guidance
(PPB), Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn), and Biology Education (Pend.
Bio). These six study programs were submitted to the National Accreditation
Board for Higher Education (BAN PT) with a B accreditation.
The fourth phase is the
growth period (2001-2009). Under the leadership of Rector Dr. Sulistiyo, M.Pd.,
IKIP PGRI Semarang, which had plans to become a university, established itself
to exist in the form of IKIP. The enthusiasm of various universities for
renaming prompted IKIP PGRI Semarang to increasingly focus on its role as a
university training education staff. During this time, there was a significant
increase in IKIP PGRI Semarang's position as one of the top five preferred
private universities (PTS) by prospective students.
Still in this phase,
along with the shortage of teachers, particularly in early childhood and
elementary education, in 2003, IKIP PGRI Semarang opened a D-2 Kindergarten
Teacher Training program (PGTK), and in 2004, it opened a D-2 Elementary School
Teacher Education program (PGSD). In 2009, the PGSD D-2 curriculum was upgraded
to a Bachelor's level, and the PGTK D-2 program was upgraded to a Bachelor's
level under the name Early Childhood Education (PAUD). To support the Central
Java Governor's program of considering Javanese as a local subject, IKIP PGRI
Semarang also developed a study program in Javanese Language and Literature
Education.
The fifth phase
(2009-present) emphasizes character education. During this time, IKIP PGRI
Semarang, under the leadership of Chancellor Dr. Muhdi, SHMHum, continues to
socialize character education methods for students. Various activities aimed at
realizing the implementation of character education are ongoing during this
phase. During this time, the Semarang Institute of Technology (ATS),
established in 1979 under the management of YPLP PT PGRI Semarang, was also
involved, leading to the merger of IKIP PGRI Semarang with ATS on April 17,
2014, through Decree No. 143/P/ of the Minister of Education and Culture. In
2014, the decision was made to merge IKIP PGRI Semarang with ATS into
Universitas PGRI Semarang, offering 2 Master's programs, 13 Bachelor's programs
in Education, 7 Bachelor's programs in Engineering, and 3 Diploma programs in
Engineering.
